John Deere started in the early 1800s, manufacturing tools and machinery for agriculture. With a worldwide business and over 47,000 staff the 180 year old company is renowned for its tractors, which are the subject of this piece. It also markets a range of equipment for the construction and agricultural sectors, power tools and spares for its machines.
John Deere is mostly famous for its range of tractors. It manufactures about 13 different series of them, from 18HP to 450HP. We shall examine the pros and cons of its smallest model in greater detail, as it is the most relevant to amateur gardeners: the 2210 4WD compact tractor.
The liquid cooled diesel engine is economical to run and provides a respectable 23HP. This good looking tractor keeps its engine cool with a liberal coolant flow of 5.5 gallons a minute.
The 4-wheel drive train can be switched from 4-wheel to 2-wheel drive while the tractor is in operation. If additional traction is required the wheels can be locked individually. It also features power points in the middle section and towards the rear to supply power to other equipment as required.
Its hydraulic transmission makes for smooth gear shifting when you drive, while the power steering allows for easy changes of direction. The tractor was designed with ease and comfort of use in mind and features John Deere’s proprietary Twin Touch™ two-pedal foot control. It is also worth noting the engine is isolated to keep the vibrations and resulting fatigue to the driver to a minimum.
The 2210 4WD engine is very dependable and allows operation up to the very last drop in the tank. The system bleeds itself automatically on refuel to get rid of any air and allow the engine to start on demand. The tractor also features wet disk brakes, immersed in oil for fast and reactive action.
It is fully compliant with the ASAE, SAE and OSHA standards. For added security the engine will not fire up without a driver in the seat.

The 2210 4WD tractor is very adaptable and can accommodate many accessories, such as a 54-inch blade that can instantly turn it into a front-end loader. This nifty attachment comes with a curved in surface blade with heavy gauge construction and the rear of the blades feature a reinforced angle for additional strength. You can even tilt it by 30 degrees for increased effectiveness: it allows you to shift or level soil as required.
